In a recent email conversation with Vincent of New Orleans Guitars I was told the following about the neck carve. I want to pass it on for those who want to know...
From Vincent:
...and the necks,...well, I grind them all to be about 1 11/16 heavy at the nut and the neck is shaped to fit the fretboard width,...there's definitely going to be variances because I eye it up, but as for the thickness of the necks, I measure that during the carve process and maintain a tolerance of about .010'',..not bad for wood. I don't know,...I just shape them until they feel right,.....some might have heavier shoulders than others but it's splitting hairs,...ash necks are the toughest to carve because the grain is so much coarser than mahogany or limba, but across the board they're pretty consistent....if the wood is lighter in weight, I tend to hang to a heavier measurement, but all of the necks come in around 850-860 at the 3rd, and 940-950 at the 12th. |
